Asia, Brazil Helps Latin Shipping

China, Brazil and Colombia are expected to continue driving growth in Latin American shipping.

The Brazilian general manager for the world's third-largest container shipper expects growth in Latin American shipping to continue, especially on the Asia routes. He expects the strongest growth in routes between the Atlantic coast of Latin America and Asia, the Atlantic coast and Europe, while more uncertain times for the east coast of North America. He is seeing less and less imports from the United States. They expect the TEU traffic between the east coast of South America and Asia to double the next three to four years.

Inbound trade from China is expected to grow strongly. In Mexico alone, TEU imports from China will likely grow 10 percent or more. Experts also believe they will see same kind of growth in Peru, Chile and maybe Ecuador. Generally, it is felt that imports from China should be very good.

China May Expand Oil Exploration, Refining Investments in Peru

China may increase exploration and refining investments in Peru, South America's fifth-largest gas producer, to boost fuel output as domestic demand rises. Peruvian government officials will meet with executives at China National Petroleum Corp., the nation's biggest oil company, later this week, Peru Vice Energy Minister Pedro Gamio Aita said in an interview in China's southern city of Guangzhou yesterday. Peru will seek technical support from China on oil exploration, Gamio said, without elaborating.
The South American country is counting on $4 billion in investment in its oil and gas industry to spur an annual 7 percent economic growth over the next four years. China, the world's second-biggest energy user, is encouraging domestic producers to expand fuel output to meet surging demand, prompted by the fastest economic growth in a decade. China increased crude imports from the Latin American country 88 percent to 172,085 metric tons in June, the Beijing customs said July 23. Peru was China's 15th largest crude supplier that month.

Argentina to Limit Surging Imports of Chinese Goods

Seeking to protect local manufacturers and boost job creation, Argentine President Nestor Kirchner imposed new restrictions on surging Chinese imports. Kirchner said tighter controls on products such as electronics, automobile tires, bicycles and watches will benefit national industries and further cut unemployment. The measures will also include import licenses, registries and health and safety inspections. Victor Wang, head of China Trade, Investment & Tourism Center, SA in Buenos Aires claims the move is campaign posturing and could affect Chinese investment in Argentina, which had soared 73 percent in June from a year earlier.
